Part 7: Creating Dynamic Menus

At this point, you've made quite a bit of progress with setting up your site with eCrowds. In this session, we'll cover adding dynamic menus (such as a "What's New" menu, breadcrumbs, "Announcements," etc.). Out-of-the-box your eCrowds system comes with menus for: context navigation, new users, top navigation, quicklinks (which outputs selected items and is empty), and a tags menu. However, now that you've expanded on your site's taxonomy, perhaps you want to create a menu based on your site's architecture, such as breadcrumbs, to show your users the path to the page they're currently browsing. To do so:

  1. Click on Quick Links in the upper-right corner of the interface and click "Menus"
  2. Click "Create new menu"
  3. Enter a name for your menu
  4. Select "Taxonomy" from the "Type" drop-down
  5. Select the module type from which to base the menu. In this case, because we are concerned with the paths of pages a users visits, we'll select "Pages"
  6. Choose the taxonomy on which to base the menu
  7. You will have several objects under "Taxonomy Type." Select the option that best corresponds to how you'd like your breadcrumbs to appear. In most cases, this option will be "Parent Object and Categories."
  8. Select the limit of items to display in the menu.
  9. Feel free to make additional modifications under the "Options" section
  10. Click "Create Menu" to submit.

You can now add this menu to a region of your template, or within template regions specific to a particular Content Type.
